Recipients of this distinguished award must undergo a rigorous evaluation process focusing on management and staff; housekeeping and maintenance; exterior, grounds and public areas; room décor, ambience and amenities; bathrooms; and guest services. Five Diamond Award® winners are a select group; for 2010, just 0.28 percent of the 31,000 AAA Rated® lodgings and 27,000 AAA Rated restaurants received the prestigious designation.

Three hotels have maintained the Five Diamond Rating for 34 consecutive years (since the Diamond Ratings were first applied to hotels): The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Camelback Inn, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa, in Scottsdale, Ariz.; and The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.

The only restaurant to maintain Five Diamond status for 22 consecutive years (since the Diamond Ratings were first applied to restaurants) is The Inn at Little Washington Dining Room in Washington, Va.

Florida and Nevada gained the most Five Diamond Award winners, each with three additional lodgings.

Areas with the most Five Diamond lodgings: California (20); Florida (13); Nevada (8); New York (7); Quintana Roo, Mexico (7); and Georgia (6).
